SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Tim and Patty Rowland became active in helping the people of Haiti through a priest
He's Fr. Rick Frechette who's also a doctor.
His life's work in Haiti the last 2-decades motivated the Rowlands to get involved in the past and now the present.

"However horrendous it was before, it's 100,000 times that now," said Tim Rowland. He speaks about Haiti from experience. He's been to the impoverished country before. So have some staff members from Community Life Support. Rowland is CEO of CLS -- a patient care and ambulance service provider in South Abington Township.

Now his wife, Patty, is headed to Haiti this weekend. She's an x-ray technician at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital with cardio vascular training.
"She could start I-V's, she could be draining abscesses," said Rowland. "There's a magnitude of things she could do, you know, take x-rays, things like that."
Rowland's wife has helped in Haiti about a dozen times before -- but never in these extreme dire circumstances. Her past experience there should make her very resourceful.
"She knows the lay of the land, you know, she knows the set-up, she knows what's expected," said Rowland.

He's heartbroken to see a former hospital in ruins near the Haitian capital city of Port-Au-Prince.
The 4-story building was used in recent years to store medical supplies.
It collapsed in Tuesday's quake killing at least one volunteer.
Rowland's group hastily raised $10,000 on Thursday - all cash - to help the earthquake victims buy necessities immediately.
Besides money and manpower, Rowlands group Community Life Support has also donated equipment to Haiti, including an ambulance just last year..

"I actually drove the ambulance to Miami, put it on a boat and came home," said Rowland.
He says he's prepared to leave home and go himself to the devastated country of Haiti once his wife returns.
Patty Rowland left Newark airport Friday morning on a flight bound for the Dominican Republic.
From there, she'll drive into the quake zone.
She expects to remain helping in Haiti for the next week or two.
