SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Lackawanna County plans to file lawsuits in Commonwealth and Federal Court to get permission to use its electronic voting machines in the November General Election.
Use of the machines has been banned until testing is complete on a software improvement. That is not likely to be be completed in time for the General Election.
Lackawanna County Judges Tom Munley and Carmen Minora, acting as the Election Board, say they believe the machines purchased by the county last year have proved to be "user friendly" and offer dependable technology.
They are hoping the lawsuits results in fast action by both the Commonwealth and Federal Courts.
A spokesman for the County Commissioners' Office says that a backup system, probably involving paper ballots, will have to be ready just in case. The County is hoping it can recover the costs of that system from the state.
