SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The two biggest counties in northeastern Pennsylvania went head-to-head in a competition Wednesday. Lackawanna and Luzerne counties held a blood drive show-down to benefit the American Red Cross.
Lackawanna County's blood drive was held at the University of Scranton. Luzerne County's drive was held at the courthouse in Wilkes-Barre.
In the end, Lackawanna County won the competition. They collected 94 pints of blood. Luzerne County collected a total of 65 pints of blood.
People who rolled up their sleeves Wednesday in Scranton knew they were doing something important. With each donation, a total of three lives can be saved.
"I'm a regular donor. It was time to donate, every eight weeks so, I got the letter in the mail and I figured I'd come down to the school and give," Kaitlyn Thorne of Moscow said.
Giving for the first time Wednesday was University of Scranton freshman Melinda Barch. She summed up the blood drive's importance.
"Just to be a hero to someone else," Barch said.
Bragging rights were on the line. Lackawanna County continually loses this yearly competition. In the past five years, Luzerne County has won four times.
"Lackawanna's going to win now, because I'm usually on the winning team, so, I was in Luzerne the last couple of times. They won. It's time for Lackawanna County to win now," Garrette Michaels of Freeland said.
The stakes of the competition were high. Because Lackawanna County won, commissioner Greg Skrepenak will have to give Lackawanna County commissioner AJ Munchak ten rings of kielbasa. | |
