SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Unexpected problems could delay reassessment in Lackawanna County for up to 7 years!

The county commissioners heard that estimate during a public hearing on the status of reassessment on Thursday.

Gene Porterfield of 21st Century Appraisals said that many problems have been found during the assessment process, some dating back 30 to 40 years. Most of thm deal with maps that are not as accurate as they should be. In some cases houses have been built on properties where the land owners haven't been identified.

Porterfield told the commissioners it will take up to 7 years to complete reassessment unless the county can devote additional resources and or manpower to the efforts.

County residents were initially told to expect their preliminary new assessment figures this July. The delay is now expected to be at least two years.
