TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A landfill in Lackawanna County is going green in a big way.

The Alliance Landfill broke ground Wednesday afternoon on a new facility that will transform gas into electricity. Officials expect the facility will be able to power up to 20,000 homes in Lackawanna County. That's a majority of the Lackawanna Valley.

Workers say planning for the new facility has been in the works for years. The landfill used to have a different type of gas transforming-facility but that didn't work out.

Officials have not said how much the new plant will cost. They hope to have it completed by late November.
