SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Even though it was cloudy and cool Saturday afternoon, dozens of volunteers spent the day outdoors helping out the environment.

Nearly 100 people armed with trash bags spent the day cleaning-up the banks of the Lackawanna River in Scranton. Volunteers hauled away trash and put down mulch before Riverfest next weekend. Some of the volunteers were from the local ComCAST cable company.

"We have a real vested interest in making sure our neighborhoods and communities are a good place to live for our employees and our customers," ComCAST volunteer Liz Sterner said.

"It's important to show the kids that all the packaging that we have for all the products that we use doesn't just disappear. They need to be cleaned up and put in the right place or they end up here on the river," volunteer Pam Jubon said.

The annual RiverFest celebration takes place next Sunday. It features music, canoe races and food.
