June 2nd is a day some people in Wyoming county might never forget.
An F-3 tornado ripped through Lake Carey , and surrounding neighborhoods in 1998.
Clayton Evans of Lake Carey remembers it well.
“I jjust got this funny feeling and it was really eerie out and something I've never seen in my life."
That was on June 2nd 1998 .
An F-3 tornado was on it's way, and Evans had to move quick.
He stayed safe, but the tornado touched down, and stayed on the ground for about 35 miles.
From the air in 1998, you can see the houses it destroyed, and debris everywhere.
Experts were baffled.
David Nicosia of the National Weather Service says, "Which is just, at least since we've been keeping records about 50 or so years we've never recorded that before"
This is what it looked like from the ground.
Homes demolished, and people clearing the way.
Evans says he couldn't believe his eyes.
"The first thing that I did was when I got here is I went out on the boat. And I couldn't recognize a thing I saw."
The tornado made it's way through 3 counties, but hit lake carey the hardest.
Two people were killed.
The tornado changed the landscape here.
It knocked down trees, making the lake more visible from route 29.
New homes replace destroyed houses;
A sign that people have moved on 10 years later. | |
