SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A longtime Scranton bakery, which was ravaged by fire Wednesday morning, is now history. Contractors were forced to bring down the Community Bake Shop late Friday afternoon. It did not go according to the original plan.
Contractors began a big chunk of their demolition Friday morning. They started in the back of the building and were going very slowly. Around 2:00 PM, things started to change. That's when the entire left wall collapsed and a large chunk of the right wall also fell down.
Officials could not leave the shell of the bakery standing any longer. They immediately began demolition. The entire shell of the building collapsed just after 4:00 PM.
No one was hurt.
Only one window at the neighboring Citizens Bank Building was broken. The Marquee Cinema wasn't as lucky though. One theater is currently filled with one-thirds debris. You can actually see into the building from Lackawanna Avenue.
Contractors say if all goes according to plan, and the weather cooperates, a majority of the debris should be removed on Saturday afternoon. | |
