DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

A school that was founded by Catholic nuns from the Bernardine Order will see the last of its sisters leave at the end of this school year.

Principal Sister Carmencita and teacher, Sister LeRoy will be leaving LaSalle Academy in Dickson City to take on other duties for their order which is based in Reading, Pennsylvania.

LaSalle Acedemy was originally founded by the St. Mary's Visitation Parish 92 years ago. Sister Carmencita says few women are seeking to join their order these days. Their nearby convent once housed 24 nuns. Today, Sister Carmencita and Sister LeRoy are the only residents.

The school will continue operating with only lay teachers on its staff.
