Last Day at Ringtown Elementary

Last Day at Ringtown Elementary - Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 5:17PM EST

RINGTOWN, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- Today was the last day of class for students at Ringtown Elementary. And district leaders say they want the school closed for good. This year the school had less than 100 students and last year the North Schuylkill School Board voted to close the school after today. It’s a decision that's left the kids very emotional.
The end of the school year is usually an exciting time for students, but Tuesday it was bittersweet for kids leaving Ringtown Elementary. 3rd grader Daniel Tomtishen said, “I'm just really upset and I don't know why they're closing it down because its a nice school. Nothings wrong with it."

Last year the North Schuylkill School Board voted to close this school. Next year all classes will be moved to the fountain springs educational complex. 3rd grader Rachel Seresky said, “I'm gonna be sad about it because I've been here since kindergarten and it’s been a long time."

Rachel Seresky's mother Lisa says the bussing will mean an extra hour commute and will be an inconvenience. “If they get sick, you'd have to run all the way to pick them up and have somebody pick them up where this way you could jump in the car and come get them if there's an emergency," she said.

For other people the closing is more about nostalgia. Grandparent Pattie Teter said, “It’s very difficult. I went to school here. My sons went to school here. My grandsons are now in school here. Kindergarten and 3rd grade."

Current 3rd grader Trina Stoudt may sum up her feelings best. “I love this school. It’s like my home," she said.

She also says leaving her teachers will be the toughest part. “It’s gonna be tough because it’s a new school and I'm not really used to it," she added.

The fight over Ringtown Elementary may not be completely over. Several parents are still pursuing more legal action to keep the doors open.
