DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- A special church service was honoring law enforcement officers as well as fire and ambulance departments and ladies auxiliaries.

People gathered at St. Mary's Church in Dickson City for their first ever "blue mass" Sunday morning. For the last seven days -- services across the country were taking place because of national police week.

Emergency personnel are grateful to be recognized. Eagles Hose Company President Matt Horvath said, "It's not too often that anyone really thanks us for the service that we provide. so we really appreciate Saint Mary's church for putting the mass together and everything went real well."

While a blue mass honors public safety officials, there are also red masses which pay tribute to judges, lawyers and government officials. And white masses honor doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals.
