SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A Scranton man, who was convicted of stealing more than $600,000 in taxpayer money, was back in a federal courtroom Wednesday afternoon. Charles Costanzo appeared in court for a bail hearing. The hearing delayed a week, but we learned more about what landed Costanzo behind bars.
Costanzo has been in prison since the weekend. Prosecutors say he violated terms of his bail. On Wednesday, we learned Costanzo was involved in altercation with took place in Philadelphia at an arbitration hearing.
Mark Boriosi, who was a key witness in Costanzo's trial, says Costanzo made threats against him.
Costanzo's attorney says thats not true. He says the two men interacted for only seconds and there was never a threat made. He says he has the witnesses to prove it.
At Wednesday's brief court appearance, Judge Edwin Kosik took time to admonish Costanzo.
He said "you're a big guy. You're mad. You've got a temper. That's what gets you into trouble," Kosik told Costanzo.
Also Wednesday, we learned Costanzo will get a special meeting with his new grandchild, who was just born this week. That meeting will be supervised by U. S. Marshals and will take place at the federal courthouse.
Courthouse officials say meetings like this involve no physical contact.
Lawyers say a bail hearing for Costanzo next Wednesday may not even be necessary, because the judge says he is ready to sentence Costanzo on the charges that stole taxpayer money. That could send him to prison for up to 186 years. | |
