BRODHEADSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - State funded agencies and projects continue to suffer from budget cuts. Libraries are trying to survive on 20% less money than usual.

Eyewitness News visited story time at the Western Pocono Community Library Wednesday. Their kids heard holiday stories and met a dog who showed off his reading skills.

Sheila Leach is the Children's Librarian there. She said programs like that enrich kids. She explained, "The younger that you begin to read the stronger you become as an adult."

But across the state budget problems are forcing libraries to cut programs. Western Pocono lost about 20% of its funding, that adds up to about $27,000.

Library Director Carol Kern said she hasn't had to cut programs but she has had to reduce staff. She has not replaced the last six employees who left. She added that it's especially tough because while libraries are losing money - they're gaining popularity. She said, "We're busier than usual and people have to wait just a bit longer for service."

Parents hope the budget shortfall doesn't cause any other problems because kids get so much out of it. Heather Cerrone brings her two children to story time. Madison is one and Brady is two. Heather said, "This is one thing in the community that my son absolutely loves to come. He loves to hear story time. He loves to learn. He loves getting new books."

You can drop donations off at the Western Pocono Community LIbrary. It's on Pilgrim Way just off of Route 115 in Brodheadsville.
