Lighting Fixture Blamed in Hughesville Fire

Lighting Fixture Blamed in Hughesville Fire - Friday, March 20, 2009 at 6:08PM EST

Hughesville, Lycoming County-
Four people escaped an early morning blaze in eastern Lycoming County.

Flames gutted the upstairs of the home at 12 Walnut Street in Hughesville just after 6am Friday.

The commotion woke neighbor Lynsey Gardner.

Gardner recalled, “We heard screaming- fire, help- and my boyfriend and I came outside.”

Gardner went over to the burning house, just about a hundred feet away, to help.

She noted, “It was pretty bad. You could see the flames coming from the roof and smoke everywhere.”

We’re told four people lived in the house- a woman, her boyfriend, the woman’s son, and another adult man. All of them made it out safely.

Gardner explained, “We helped them get some clothes and stuff like that. Their house was visibly on fire. They said they didn’t hear fire alarms or anything like that.”

We’re told smoke also billowed from a neighboring shed, causing concern for those who live nearby.

Gardner added, “I was scared when they were screaming. I thought the fire was in our building. I looked in my son’s room and was about to grab him. And my boyfriend said it wasn’t at ours.”

A state police fire marshal believes a faulty light fixture in the upstairs bathroom may be to blame for the blaze.

He estimates the fire caused about $100,000 in damages.
