WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY- From the outside it might not look like much. But lightning sure did a number to the Wyoming Monument over the weekend. From the inside you can see a big crack in the top of the monument - where the lightning first came in.

The bolt went in the top of the monument, traveled down the side blowing open that door, then came to the second level, cracking the plaque in half and blowing off huge chunks of the stone facing causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Large stones were cracked in half. You can even see burn marks the lightning caused on the rocks. Monday engineers got some help from the Kingston Fire Department to see just how bad the damage is on this 167 year old piece of history - a piece very important to the people here.

Marcella Starr of the Wyoming Monument Association said, "This is the history of the valley... If you look at the names they are all the streets you see here. Butler, Dennison, Hollenback, they're all the people that were that made this valley that were the first people to be here in the valley."

Now efforts turn to repairing and preserving the centerpiece of Wyoming. Mayor Bob Boyer said, "It's kind of the hub of our town. A lot of history in Wyoming and it's a pretty special place where the monument lies, it attracts a lot of people and we're really saddened by the damage."

Betsy Youngblond brought her granddaughter to see what happened. Betsy is a Hollenback and sees the crack right through her family's name on the 600-pound plaque. "We see that the crack is right on the Hollenback name who was a great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandfather of mine," she said.

The bolt also damaged a flag pole, ripping a couple of holes in it. The damage estimates will be finished later this week. They're expected to be at least several thousand dollars.
