WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY- Lightning strikes a local monument causing quite a bit of damage. The storms Saturday also knocked out power to dozens of homes.

Marcella Starr of the Wyoming Monument Association said, “The monument has been here for 131 years. It is a tribute to soldiers slain during a battle here. Their bones are buried under the monument.”

Members of the Wyoming Monument Association are still trying to asses the damage done by lightning at the National Historic Site. The jolt did enough damage to shock everyone that looks at it. “Lightning struck it and it actually cracked the big plaque with people's names,” added Starr.

Association members say they will likely turn to the community to help repair the damage. Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer said, “We think the damage is going to be quite costly so we are just asking people to stay tuned to the local media and consider lending a hand once we have an idea of the estimate of the damage.”

The lightning also blew the top off the monument flag pole and left it littered with holes. The lightning strike also hit a nearby tree and telephone pole. The hit blew utility wires off the poles and caused an electrical fire, closing Wyoming Avenue for a time. Firefighters detoured drivers until the area was safe.

Power was out for homeowners from 8th Street to the Midway Shopping Center most of the day Saturday.
