STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - When litter bugs toss garbage in Stroudsburg, Darrel Dennis exterminates the mess.
"I'm the Litter Buster - the Stroudsburg Litter Buster," he announced.
Darrel picked up his broom and dustpan about four years ago.
He said, "I just started to do it. I just walked down Main Street and started sweeping up."
People have heard him and his trusty sidekicks sweeping the streets from dawn to noon just about every day. He said, "I figure if we can keep it clean the people will come into the shops and that."
No one pays Darrel. And he's never asked for any money. But there is one offer he will accept. A hot coffee with cream. '
Darrel laughed, "I do it any way even if I don't get coffee. That's all I ask."
Business owners look forward to seeing him each morning. Frank Brown of the Pocono Inne Towne said, "Darrell has never asked anybody for anything. He does this out of the goodness of his heart."
But now Darrel needs to rest his heart. He dumped his last pan of trash Thursday. Doctor's orders. As the Litter Buster hangs up his tools he hopes another Main Street hero can pick up his days of picking up.
He encouraged others, "Come on people. We got a nice little town here. Let's all get together and keep this town beautiful."
Darrel wishes he could stay and help but he knows it's time to pass the pan. "I walk away head down just shaking my head because it's dirty," he said.
Stroudsburg Borough Council honored Darrel for his service Wednesday night.
