MONROE COUNTY - As you drive around the Poconos admiring the trees you might notice there's also a lot of trash.
Bruce Gotta of West Milford grimaced, "I notice it all the time."
Judy Cherepko is the Monroe County Litter Coordinator. She's worked here for seven years. She said every year -- the litter problem seems worse. She said, "it's ignorance and it needs to stop because we have a beautiful area here and they're trashing it up."
She explained some people litter because they don't care. And others don't seem to know better. Especially people who come from cities with street sweepers. She recalled, "i've had somebody actually call me and say when are you going to sweep the woods. And i'm like we don't sweep woods here. You have to get a garbage hauler."
But whether you know the rules or not -- you can get a fine of up to three-hundred-dollars. She said,"i wish the fines would be higher because I think when you hit people in the pocket they learn."
Judy tries to teach people about littering. She uses games. They teach people what items can be recycled and how.
If you'd like to help clean up some of this mess the litter control board can help you for free. They have free gloves, garbage bags and they'll even take the trash away for you.
