WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY --A Congressman wants to give us a break from the painful prices at the pump. Consumer reporter Jeff Chirico is live in the studio with this part of the story.

It seems the pump prices are impacting almost every business and we end up paying for it one way or another. Now Representative Paul Kanjorski wants to tax Big Oil's windfall profits. But he admits there's little chance of it becoming law.

When Bill Amos stopped to fill up, he found his gas cap stolen. He also believes his fuel may have been siphoned. Bill Amos/Nanticoke“I was down to a half tank and this morning it was a quarter. The light just came on." It's not surprising as gas gets more expensive.

Traveling welder Tom Weihbraecht says he has to pass the increase on to customers. "The gas goes up. We have to raise our prices." But this cab driver can't. Taxi rates are set by the state and the high prices are hurting business. “We can't make no money doing this."

These drivers want the government to step in. "They got to reduce it somehow." Charlie Lavallee "It’s a shame. Government doesn't want to do nothing.

Congressman Paul Kanjorski announces a bill that would tax oil companies' record profits to help alleviate pain at the pump.
Rep. Paul Kanjorski/(D) 11th District
"I guarantee you the oil companies would start reducing their prices." Kanjorski blames big oil, the Middle East, and the administration for fueling the country's economic mess.

Phil Pisano who owns a Sunoco gas station and repair shop in Wilkes-Barre says he's feeling the pinch. He's selling less gas but still has the all the bills.

Phil Pisano/Phil's Sunoco
“I won't close shop but I might close pumps in a year." --unless something changes.

But Kanjorski doesn't believe the president will sign his bill. He has strong words for the administration. "These two fellows from Texas -- the president and vice president are both oil men. They think the price of oil is great."

Kanjorski says five other bills that would help lower gas prices have passed the House. He says the Senate is deadlocked on them and the President has vowed to veto them.
