The state of the U.S. economy was at the forefront of President Bush's State of the Union Address Monday night.

The president is reaching the end of his final term in office. He urged congress to pass a 150-billion-dollar economic stimulus package to give the nation's economy a much needed boost.

While Bush conceded that the economy is undergoing what he called "a period of uncertainty," he said in the long run, Americans can be confident about economic growth. He also implored congress not to raise taxes, saying taxes are high enough.

The speech is important to all Americans, especially our young people. We invited some Wilkes University students to watch the State of the Union Address with us. They are the future leaders of America. Whatever happens now their generation will have to deal with later, so these Wilkes University communications students really paid close attention to what President Bush had to say. They took notes but they really listened, and then spoke out.

Wilkes Junior Kate Marzzacco from Carbondale said, "I think he did address the issues but if I didn't know better I would think the country was in great shape. I know better."

Junior Amanda Cawley from Dupont said, “I think overall he addressed most of the things Americans wanted to hear. But me as a student would have addressed more for upper education rather than education for kids. While that's important, it doesn't affect us."

And Junior Jamie Gwynn from Edwardsville added, "I do like his act for kids. American are not patient, they want things now, what they do for them we will all benefit from that."
