FORTY FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY -- A Forty Fort salon will send it's cut hair to the gulf to help the oil slick.
Through a national program, locks of cut hair will be transformed into booms to soak up the oil. Star Tresses co-owner Hilary Forlenza said, "It's absolutely wonderful. it's right there, it's literally at everyone's feet to just sweep up the hair, but it in a box, send it down. I think it's a huge, huge help."
Star Tresses is helping a program called Matter of Trust. Through it's international natural fiber recycling movement this hair will be stuffed in nylon hoses and then used as booms to contain spilled oil.
Star Tresses says the mess in the gulf inspired them to help. Hair naturally collects oil so it's an easy way to help says co-owner Hillary Forlenza. "If a fraction of every salon did this, it would be a wonderful thing," said Forlenza.
According to the Matter of Trust's website, the Program is collecting about 500,000 pounds of hair from across the country each week.
