WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- U. S. Army Sergeant Douglas Bull died in Afghanistan early this month. He was 29-years-old. Saturday his family and friends honored him at Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre.

Douglas’ wife Tera said, "We are trying to be strong because we know that Doug would not want us to be sad. Because he did everything he could to make us happy."

Tera said while this may be called a memorial, it was not a place for tears or sadness. "He was always happy from the time he woke up until the time he went to bed," she said.

It was a place to remember the happy times, to remember how he loved his two kids and his wife, to remember his pride in the Army. And it seemed most of all to remember his smile and the laughter he brought into the world. His friend Gino Mercadante said, "He always lit up the room - let's put it that way."

Mercadante and Bull were childhood friends. "The kid’s got a perm-a-smile on his face all the time. Every time I've seen him he's always been smiling."

Congressman Paul Kanjorski came to honor the man behind the smile. "The Sergeant's life was not in vain," he said.

He thanked the family for their sacrifice and gave them memorial flags. All of this at Bull's alma matter. He graduated from this high school in 1997. His classmates never realized they had a hero among them. "I'm very proud of what he did and what he stood for," added Tera.

A comedy show is being held in honor of the sergeant Saturday night at the river street jazz cafe in Wilkes-Barre from 8 to 10. It costs $10 to get in. All of the proceeds go to two charities that help soldier's families.
