PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- People traveling through the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport say they feel relatively safe with increased security measures, after a foiled terror plot over the weekend.
Gail Husson is heading home to California after spending the holidays with family in Pike County. She was surprised to hear a man was able to get explosive materials on a flight from the Netherlands to Detroit this weekend without getting caught by security.
"I guess I would think they'd have dogs that would be able to detect those kinds of chemical smells," said Husson, who was glad the Transportation Security Administration is increasing security at all international airports. "We want to feel safe, but I'm not sure what more they can do."
TSA officials tell us only people flying internationally will see those beefed up security measures, but people we talked with fear there will be long lines at larger airports domestically.
"I go from here to Philadelphia, from Philadelphia to Chicago, from Chicago to Wichita," said Rob Zettle, who was visiting family in Luzerne County. He wasn't sure what to expect with security locally and at the high-traffic airports. "I guess I'll find out shortly when I go through security here. I suspect it'll be a little more rigorous."
TSA officials say the added security at smaller airports won't be obvious and shouldn't affect travelers' plans, but anyone flying internationally should expect a thorough check and pat-downs by TSA workers.
"Next, they'll be making us all take off our underwear or something," joked Husson.
"I appreciate the fact that people, I'm sure, are taking the extra precautions now and what is to be will be," said Carol Repecki of Dickson City. | |
