Local Vets Excited About Military Call-In Center - Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 4:40PM EST

Sunbury, Northumberland County-

Local veterans are excited about a prospective military call-in center currently being set up in Sunbury. The center would help discharged vets find employment here at home.

218 Chestnut Street in Sunbury is undergoing some major renovations. When they're finished, this building will help returning veterans find employment, both locally and nationally.

Vietnam veteran Larry Saleski said, "I think it would be wonderful because when we came back from Vietnam, they had nothing. I mean, to have somebody come out here and help people out would be a wonderful thing."

Workers here will help veterans fill out employment applications and other paperwork both online and over the phone.

Construction has been underway for about three months, and it's almost wrapped up.

Developer and WWII veteran Stan Seiple noted, "The furniture will be delivered and the call-in stations will be set up beginning tomorrow. So the inside is pretty well finished."

The call-in center will employ 11 people at individual stations to start, but has room to expand up to 23 employees. We're told, preferably, those jobs would go to "wounded warriors" or other military veterans.

The call-in center also has plenty of public support.

Business owner Mark Mallett explained, "Anything that brings employment, especially to veterans, and helps them and employs them, it's hard to find any reasons not to be in favor of this."

It's expected the center will be staffed 24 / 7, since soldiers returning from different parts of the world are not on the same time schedules.

And we're told the need for the facility is clear.

Seiple added, "In fact, Pennsylvania is one of only five states that has in excess of one million veterans, so there's a lot of room to do a lot of good locally plus nationally."

Officials from the Department of Defense are expected to be in attendance at a ribbon-cutting ceremony tentatively scheduled for the first week of April.
