Long Lines Greet Morning Voters - Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 10:55AM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- The polls have been open in the Eastern Time zone for a few hours now. There are many reports of long lines. Eyewitness News was at Kistler Elementary School in South Wilkes-Barre Tuesday morning, typically one of the busiest polling places in the city. And busy was the name of the game all over Luzerne County.

For first time voter John Lipka, it was a sight to see. "I had no idea what to expect and seeing how many people there are down there now, it's pretty neat to see all this," he said.

Lipka lined up outside the Trucksville United Methodist Church. He and dozens of voters were there an hour before the polling station opened. "I think it's important that everybody get out in this most important election. I know that nationwide we're expecting about 20 million people to show up this morning. I think that's a great idea that everyone's coming out to exercise that right and that privilege," said Gil Edgar.

Angie Edgar of Trucksville says this election comes at a critical point. "We are going downhill very quickly and we need something to change that around," she told Eyewitness News.

Over in Nanticoke, voters were checking their ballot. This election is bringing out first time voters, like Joani Baker. "I just really wasn't interested in the past. And with the last 8 years I just want something different," she said.

But long time voters like Harry Williams says this election is just like any other. "Doesn't feel any different from when I voted last time. Black or white, the person's going to get in there," he said.

No matter the outcome, record turnout is expected. Statewide registration is at an all time high, and from the lines at the polls, people are ready to cast their vote in 2008. The polls are open until 8:00 P. M. Tuesday.
