SOUTH ABINGTON TWP., LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- After more than 10 years in cramped quarters, a post office in Lackawanna County is about to get some breathing room. South Abington Township officials have given final approval for plans to move the local post office.

For the last decade, people in South Abington Township have been using a trailer to get their mail. That will soon be changing. Charlie Warholak of Chinchilla says, Its about time. Its going to alleviate the traffic problems here on Shady Lane Road and Northern Boulevard and easier-in, easier-out. I think everybody's gonna like it."

The post office will move across the street to the first floor of the McCarthy Flowers building. Officials say it will be more convenient and have more parking. Robert Saunders of Clarks Summit says, Certainly more parking would be helpful because right now, its pretty cramped and I think overall we just need an improvement here."

Speaking of cramped parking, customers say its even worse inside the trailer right now when its busy. Sarah VanBelle of South Abington Township says, When there's a line, its hard to kinda move around and it backs up very quickly and things."

Its a bit cramped. Its certainly the most tight post office quarters in the area," adds Saunders.

Postal officials say it will take them about three months to move into their new facility. They hope to be open here by the fall. Customers say they can't wait for the new facility to open.

Postal workers say they're excited too. They say they serve hundreds of people each and every day. Doreen Adams of Chinchilla says, This was supposed to be a temporary and its been for a while and I've been waiting to see an improvement here.

The township was forced to use the trailer when the lease on its old building ran out. Concerns over what the new facility would look like slowed the process down for the last few months or so.
