Low Voter Turnout in Wilkes-Barre Despite Controversy

Low Voter Turnout in Wilkes-Barre Despite Controversy - Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 6:05PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- In Luzerne County, voters are turning out in the midst of a federal corruption probe. That probe has nabbed eight officials. Five of them were at the Luzerne County Courthouse and three in Luzerne County school districts.

However the controversy did not bring out large numbers of voters. But those who did vote say they want change under the dome.

It may look like any other Election Day. The campaign signs are just about everywhere, and volunteers work the polling places. We found people doing their civic duty. Some say that duty has special meaning this year.

Michael Blum said, "Today was the day I especially voted for the judges try to get some judges try to get some of the corruption out of the valley that we have maybe we can make a difference now."

Other folks told Eyewitness News they vote all the time, but the corruption scandal made them even more determined to let their voice be heard. Marilyn Matthews said, "My main motivation was to see change in our county government and our Wilkes-Barre Area School District. All people don't seem to be honest anymore. Greed seems to be the big thing, it's sad."

Carl Matthews added, "The way things are going, the way I read all the graft all that money being handed out there for things that don't pertain to the public."

And despite all of this, voter turnout was low at midday. Some are not surprised. Brian DeSiderio said, "But this area they like to stay in the house. For the primary there’s low turnout I would hope a lot of people would come out and hopefully get out and vote."
