JENKINS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY- Lowe's Distribution Center in Jenkins Township held its grand opening Friday. The facility will create about 300 new jobs.
Michael Sofchak of Avoca is one of 400 workers already hired here. Sofchak says, "It's comfortable that you know you have a job, I mean I have children at home so you want to have a secure life, have a family and take care of everybody. So I basically feel happy, I know I'm secure here."
Sofchak will have about 300 new co-workers in this massive building. That's how much Lowes says it will hire in the next few months. Most of the 300 plus jobs will be hourly warehouse employees boxing up goods like this and shipping them off to Lowes stores across the region. The goods will be shipped to stores in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey to be exact.
Things like power tools, lights, bathroom cabinets are what Lowes specializes in selling. President Larry Stone says Northeastern Pennsylvania made sense for a new center. It's close to big cities, and has plenty of room to operate here at this industrial park. Stone says, "It's just a real plus when people take a real interest in wanting to help you come here and locate and all the jobs we can create and the tax base that we can create. The investment that's sitting here today is a huge investment for us as a company. "
