Luzerne County Homestead Exclusion flap

Luzerne County Homestead Exclusion flap - Friday, February 19, 2010 at 6:33PM EST

Friday, Feb 19, 2010 @ 06:33pm EST

Luzerne county homeowners at Friday’s commissioners meeting were upset about the disappearance of a popular tax break.

The homestead exclusion, approved in February 2008, knocked off about 50 dollars from home owners tax bills.

It did so by dropping the assessed value of a home by 10 thousand dollars.

Bbut on 2010 tax bills, the homestead exclusion isn't showing up.

Thomas Dombroski of trucksville said, "They're hurting the senior citizens who are just hanging on by a thread with their homes."

At this meeting, commissioner Maryanne Petrilla says a vote wasn't taking this year to approve homestead.

Commissioner Stephen Urban says it should have renewed automatically if it was approved in 2008.

The county says it will seek a "legal opinion" to move forward.

Addressing some people who spoke out during the public comment session of the meeting, Petrilla said, "We'll get it right. So to stand here screaming and yelling saying it's a perpetual law, we will research it. A vote was not taken to put the homestead on so that's why the homestead was not put on."
