Luzerne County has lost another serviceman overseas.
Navy Petty Officer Brian Patton died Thursday in Kuwait serving in operation Iraqi Freedom.
Patton grew up in Nanticoke and Hanover.
On Tuesday he died in a non-combat car accident when his vehicle crashed into another in a non-combat situation.
Brent Makarczyk of Nanticoke talked with Eyewitness News and said, “I'm going to miss him tremendously”
Patton leaves behind a wife and two sons, ages eight and eighteen
Makarczyk said, "He was just kind of the glue that kept the family together. He lived and died for his family and was just an unbelievably loyal, trustworthy friend, cousin and father."
Patton served in the navy for years.
Originally from the Hanover and Nanticoke area, Patton finished high school in Illinois , where he lived with his grandparents.
He served in the navy for six years and then went to Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Makarcyk was his roommate.
After college, Patton worked at the state prison in Dallas and joined the navy reserves, where he was a military police officer.
Nanticoke Area superintendent Anthony Perrone remembers Patton well.
"Whatever he did, he did it with all the gusto he had," said Perrone.
Perrone added, “When you know someone well and they're so young and vibrant you don't expect something like that. So I think it hit everybody really hard."
Funeral plans are still being finalized, but the family tells me Patton will be laid to rest in Nanticoke . | |
