DRUMS, LUZERNE COUNTY -- A local teenager is raising money for injured troops by singing. With the help of her piano teacher, Danny DeMelfi of Hazleton, 15-year-old Kaity McCourt of Drums co-wrote the song "I Stand For You." She's performing it at the Walter Reed Medical Center's Christmas party on Sunday.
McCourt says her parents' non-profit organization, Friends of the First Battalian, opened her eyes to what American troops have gone through, including Marine Sgt. Jacob Knospler, who we interviewed earlier this year.
"Stories like that just inspired me to write the song," said McCourt. As for performing in front of troops on Sunday, she says, "I think it's going to be hard to not get upset, because it's seeing everything right there in front of you, but I'm going to try to control myself because I don't want to get upset while I'm singing."
Despite all of the attention, McCourt says the focus should be on the troops. Any donations raised by people downloading the song will go towards Friends of the First Battalion, which provides financial help for families of wounded troops each year.
"This isn't really about me, this is more for the troops," added McCourt. "I don't need to carry anything away from this. I just want as many servicemen and women to hear this as possible and for many people to help out with the donations."
