Luzerne County employee sentenced

Luzerne County employee sentenced - Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 4:40PM EST

LUZERNE COUNTY- A former clerk in the Luzerne county treasurer's office was sentenced Wednesday for stealing tax payer money. Jennifer Masulis pleaded no contest to stealing more than 14,000 dollars. She was sentenced to two years probation. Masulis doesn't apologize on camera after her sentencing at the Luzerne County courthouse. During her sentencing, she apologized to a judge, with a tearful plea for no jail time. We asked Masulis, if there was anything she would like to say to the taxpayers of Luzerne County. Masulis said, “I now have faith in the justice system, I will tell you that."

Masulis stole delinquent tax payments while working out of the treasurers office Luzerne County's courthouse. Prosecutors say she stole from April 2006 to February 2007. Assistant district attorney Jim McMonagle calls the sentence fair saying, "She's saddled with a felony conviction for the rest of her life. Any time she files an application for anything that asks you, have you been convicted, she has to answer yes."

Luzerne County deputy treasurer D omincik Depolo says changes have been made since the theft. Depolo said, “We feel as though we've made the appropriate adjustments putting safeguards into effect from happening again. And we want to say to the tax payers, restitution will be made, we're happy with that."

Treasurers office manager L aura Beers says Masulis was a dependable worker, but it's time to move on. "She was talented, skilled, outgoing with the customers, completely trustworthy, but moving forward. The rest of my staff is as well," said Beers.

After paying a tax bill, Albert Brown of Nanticoke said the sentence fit the crime. "I think so. Two years probation is a long time too," said Brown.

Masulis will have to pay back all the stolen money. She's already paid back more than 6 thousand dollars. Taxpayers who had their payments stolen are covered. The county has an employee dishonesty bond that covers instances like this.
