Lyco Public Safety Director Retiring

Lyco Public Safety Director Retiring - Monday, April 27, 2009 at 5:35PM EST

Montoursville, Lycoming County-
In central Pennsylvania, a long-time public servant is stepping down after 35 years of service and a lifetime of memories.

Lots of things have changed in Gary Hutchinson’s three-and-a-half decades in public safety.

Hutchinson recalled, “Back in the 1970’s all you had to do to drive an ambulance was have a license, and that was all.”

As its director, Hutchinson has worked tirelessly to streamline and improve Lycoming County’s public safety department.

He noted, “We’ve been able to eliminate a lot of duplication of efforts and also maximize the money that we’ve been able to receive from state and federal agencies.”

Hutchinson has overseen advances in emergency services, communications, an online flood warning system, and school safety. It’s tough work that requires serious dedication.

Hutchinson explained, “The biggest challenge right now is maintaining the volunteer work force that literally saves the communities and the county millions and millions of dollars each year.”

Hutchinson says the level of teamwork that’s been achieved in Lycoming County- from elected officials, to volunteers, and everyone in between- is one of his greatest accomplishments.

He added, “None of these projects would have happened by themselves without these people and the tremendous dedication they had.”

Now as he moves into retirement, Hutchinson says he will take time to enjoy hobbies like boating and golfing, as well as spending plenty of time with family.

His experience and passion for the job will be hard to replace.

Deputy Director of Public Safety Connie Turner said, “Gary’s a lot of fun to work with. He has a great sense of humor, but he’s very dedicated. He’s been very supportive of the staff and we’re all going to miss him.”

Gary Hutchinson’s official last day on the job is Friday, May 1st.

Connie Turner will take over on an interim basis until a new director is chosen.
