Machine Gun Sale "Outrageous." - Friday, January 22, 2010 at 11:37PM EST

LUZERNE COUNTY - Commissioner chairwoman Maryanne Petrilla told Eyewitness News she's digging deep to plug holes in the county's budget, but some departments choose to ignore ways the county can realistically make money.

She calls the sale of a machine gun outrageous.

The machine gun sale brokered by Ex-Sheriff Michael Savokinas and Chief Charles Guarnieri was apparently done without any oversight or authority.

Reached by phone, Savokinas, who resigned from office in september disagreed with Petrilla.

He said, "I didn't break the law, i take offense to that. This thing was collecting dust for years."

County leaders say the Thompson sub-machine gun was originally jail property that was left with the sheriff's office for safe keeping.

But both sides of this issue are tangled in a policy dispute.

County executives told us the pricey firearm should have been appraised and then put out for bid.

Leaders speculate it could have fetched more money that the sheriffs department raked in - some $20,000.

Leaders say they may never know the gun's value.
