Mail Carriers Pull Double Duty Saturday

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - Mail carriers pulled double duty Saturday. Not only were they picking up and delivering mail, but also collecting canned goods to help needy families and struggling food banks.

Saturday marked the 18th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger food drive. It's the nation's largest single-day food drive.

Mail trucks were pulling in with the donations Saturday afternoon at the Wilkes-Barre Post Office. It's too early to tell just how successful the drive was, but organizers have some idea.

Richard Kutz of the Weinberg Regional Food Bank said, "I was out to the Back Mountain and there seemed to be a lot more food out in the Back Mountain than previous years. So, once we get everything tabulated we'll be able to tell a little bit better."

The Stamp Out Hunger campaign has collected nearly 1-billion pounds of food since it began in 1993.
