ITHACA, NEW YORK -- A New York jury has convicted Blazej Kot, who was on trial for killing 28-year-old Caroline Coffey of Clarks Green last year.
Kot was found guilty on all counts, including second degree murder and an arson charge. He'll be sentenced in May.
Coffey was a 1998 Scranton Prep graduate who then attended the University of Scranton. She grew up in Clarks Green, Lackawanna County.
Kot and Coffey met while attending Cornell University in New York. They married in early 2009 but on June 2 Coffey was found in the woods with her throat slashed. Their apartment near Ithaca had been torched.
Kot, 25, was arrested in Bradford County several days later. He was extradited to New York on murder charges.
His trial lasted more than three weeks. Jury deliberations began Monday afternoon and continued until early Tuesday afternoon.
The defense argued that Kot had a serious mental illness. Prosecutors say he killed Coffey to get out of the marriage.
