EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Police say a train smashed in to a man laying on railroad tracks in East Stroudsburg Sunday evening.
The train engineer said he saw a man on the tracks and put the brakes on - but it was too late to stop. Police say the man lifted his head just before impact.
Cardwell said, Mark Cardwell was walking in the area behind Kmart when he saw police and an ambulance. "And I was like uh oh what happened," he said. Then he realized a train hit his friend, a homeless man known to drink a lot of beer near the tracks. "Scotty was an alcoholic but he was a good person, a man of God."
People who knew the victim called him "Scotty Blue Eyes." His friend Lewann Steward said, "He had beautiful eyes. Beautiful eyes."
Scotty volunteered often at the East Stroudsburg Salvation Army. Jill Brink runs the food pantry there. She cried, "We have lost one of our best volunteers."
Steward added, "He was a caring person. He would do anything for you. He was a very good friend."
Scotty also had a part time job. He worked at the Pocono Floral Company with Alex Mckenzie. He said, "He did all the he could to help me out."
The man's friends say he shouldn't be defined by his problems. They want people to know he was a good person who will live on in their hearts.
Police are not releasing the man's identity until after they find his family.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is investigating the crash. | | |
