Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County - A family is mourning the death of a man who was killed while doing yard work in the Poconos. Robert Apuzzi was 49 years old.
Police say Lisamarie Ostuni drove off Route 196 in Coolbaugh Township and ran into him Tuesday. She was not hurt.
A cross made of wrenches marks the place where Apuzzi died. His family said that is the perfect tribute to him because he loved working on cars.
Rose Hooten said, "It was sad because Bob was my neighbor." She lives next door to his home and auto repair business. She said the death was tragic. And she always knew the speeding traffic on Route 196 could be deadly. She explained, "A lot of traffic. A lot of people don't pay attention to speed limits."
It's so dangerous that Hooten won't walk from her home to her job, which is directly across the street. She said, "I'd rather have something around me than no protection at all."
Rose was at work at Mount Pocono Self Storage Tuesday afternoon when she heard Bob get hit. She said, "I heard something not screeching or anything - but something I never heard."
Pocono Mountain Regional Police officer Daniel Smelas said, "It's obviously a tragic accident that happened." He said since most Pocono roads don't have sidewalks and drivers don't always pay attention - wearing a safety vest could help you protect yourself. He explained "Anything that will illuminate you whether it be orange whether it be bright green."
People like Hooten hope drivers take precautions so no one else loses their life. She pleaded, "Be aware. Pay attention. Don't text. Don't use a cell phone."
Police have not filed any charges in connection with the crash. They are still working on their investigation. | |
