Man Sentenced to Prison for Deadly DUI Crash - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 5:35PM EST
MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY- A Laceyville man is going to prison in connection with a deadly accident last year in Susquehanna County.
William Brown was sentenced Thursday morning. He'll spend between 11 and 23 ½ months in prison.
Brown said nothing as he left the Susquehanna County Courthouse Thursday. He's going to prison for being drunk and causing a deadly accident last year. Dale Bowen said, “What irritates me and really set me off in this case, was the fact they left him in the road."
Bowen is the father of the victim in this case. His son Matt was just 24-years-old when he died. “One needs to take responsibility for their actions and in this case, this gentleman, even today, is not taking any responsibility in his lack of respect for human life in general," said Bowen.
Family and friends of William Brown were in court Thursday. They didn't want to go on camera, but say he is remorseful. They say he thinks about the accident everyday.
The deadly accident happened last August on Route 858 in Rush Township. That's a rural part of Susquehanna County.
The victim's father hopes state police keep an extra eye out for drunk drivers. “I'm hoping maybe they'll do something and get into that area a little more, do some more patrols and if nothing more, save someone else's life," said Bowen.
Right before sentencing, prosecutors say William Brown's actions were reckless, and they said he should not have been behind the wheel. If you get a DUI, even a trivial DUI in the state of Pennsylvania, it’s on your record for 10 years and this gentleman is walking away with basically a slap on the wrist," said Bowen.
When he's released from prison, William Brown will also have to serve three years probation and perform community service. | | |
