Ricketts Glen State Park-
With many vacationers staying close to home this holiday weekend, local state parks are a very popular destination.
Rickett's Glen State Park lies on 13,000 acres of land in Luzerne, Columbia and Sullivan counties. That makes it a perfect vacation spot for thousands of people from our area.
John Derr and his family are from Watsontown. They've been here since Wednesday and will stay until Monday. John explained, "We're going to have a picnic. Camping out, swimming, hunting, fishing. Whatever we decide to do."
Everyone in the family has a favorite part of the holiday weekend.
"Spending time with my family and fireworks," said five-year-old Mackenzie Derr.
Nine-year-old Lauryn Derr said, "I'm hoping that we go swimming and can go fishing."
"Peaceful, it's out of the way from everybody," Mr. Derr added.
Many vacationers we spoke with say the high price of gasoline has them looking for hidden treasures in their own backyard.
Ruth Wheeland and her friends made it a day trip to Lake Jean here at Rickett's Glen State Park to celebrate Independence Day.
Wheeland noted, "Fourth of July means America, and it means sharing it with our friends, Bill and Sarah, who we go on picnics with most every year."
And while some braved the chilly waters of Lake Jean for a swim or a ride in the boat, Wheeland and her friends chose to stay dry, enjoying their picnic from the beach.
"We just looked for a state park, and this looked great on the map. Not too far away, so we came up here," Wheeland added.
Park officials say attendance looks very good so far for the Fourth of July weekend. | |
