SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP - After decades of planning, paperwork and approvals, the Marshalls Creek Bypass is about to reach a milestone. The project's first phase started in the summer of 2005, now that phase is almost complete.

Many people said PennDot would never get this far. They thought they would never see traffic rolling along roads prepared for the Marshalls Creek Bypass.

Walt Korab the Bypass Construction Project Manager said, "It will relieve a lot of tension and a lot of traffic at the Marshalls Creek Village."

For decades people talked about the proposed roadway. Thursday marked a big step for the $107,000,000 project. Officials held the final meeting for phase one. They tell WBRE News most of the preparation work is done and the rest should be finished soon.

Korab explained, "Most of the work will be done this year. We're just concerned about the weather and some final paving that might have to go through to Spring."

In the first phase, construction crews laid the groundwork for the rest of the project. They widened roads, did some paving and took care of environmental issues. They hope to start phase two in December.

"We'll be basically setting the roadway through the woods so that this bypass can go forward," said Korab.

Phase two includes the construction of a park and ride at the Marshalls Creek flea market. It will have more than 400 parking spaces for commuters. It will also include a PennDot maintenance building along route 209.

State Representative John Siptroth said, "Once the second phase starts, it's going to mean the completion of the bypass. Maybe not as timely as we would like to see it but none the less it's going to happen. I'm extremely pleased about that."

The project is about three years behind schedule. Officials have worried the money might not be available for the final phase. But Siptroth says the State Secretary of Transportation has promised to find the money.

PennDot expect to complete phase two in the Spring of 2010. It plans to open the bypass in 2013.
