SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- “My conscience is clear that I did the right thing,” said Bishop Martino at Monday morning’s news conference.

Perhaps one of the most controversial leaders of the diocese, Bishop Joseph Martino said in the end, it was best he move on. “I've been holding this in and it feels kind of good to get it out,” he said.

In June, Martino submitted his resignation. It was accepted a month ago. At 63, the now retired leader said insomnia and a crippling fatigue contributed to his decision. “It's not as if I have some chronic illness like diabetes. I have nothing like that, but it's just I think stress has always affected me,” he explained.

Onlookers say Martino fielded his fair share of stress with an aggressive plan resulting in dozens of school closures and a staunch position with catholic colleges and universities.

But sources say Martino's relationship with his priests taxed an already difficult situation. “I think by the world's standards, I have not been successful here, but I believe in my heart that I have been faithful,” he said.

Martino's resignation comes at a time of significant transition. Dozens upon dozens of churches will soon close. Despite a change at the top, church officials say the plans will more forward. Leader of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Cardinal Justin Rigali said, “Change and transition are always challenging to embrace, yet we know that life goes on.”

As for the future cardinal Justin Rigali will oversee the transition from Philadelphia, while Monsignor Joseph Bambera will steer the ship.

Martino says he's accepted the change. “I am not agitated in the least, I am very pleased to let the church do something new for this diocese and give it the life it deserves,” he added.
