NESQUEHONING, CARBON COUNTY- 100 acres of solar panels will fill a hillside on the western outskirts of a community on the map thanks to a coal boom now long gone. Three thousand people call Nesquehoning home. Output from the solar farm is expected to provide needed electricity for 1,450 homes.
Green Energy Capital Partners will be responsible for the project. Ground breaking will come several months from now on land owned by Kovatch Enterprises of Nesquehoning. The project is part of Governor Rendell's renewable, clean energy initiative. The plant would be the largest this side of the Mississippi. The only larger solar farm to date is on a military base in Las Vegas. Company officials said the panels will have the ability to follow sun as it charts across the sky, making for maximum energy collection. In snowy conditions, the panels would tilt to a near vertical position.
The facility is expected to be on-line sometime next spring.
