SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- He's in it to win it. Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty says he has no plans to give up his bid for governor. That news comes after a newspaper story said Doherty may be looking to run for lieutenant governor instead.

For the last few weeks, Mayor Doherty has been balancing his duties at city hall with campaign appearances across the state. In fact he's spent the last four days on the road at debates and forums, and says his only goal right now is to be the next governor of the commonwealth.

The Scranton Times newspaper Monday morning cited unnamed sources that claimed Doherty may be considering a run for lieutenant governor instead of the state's top job.

Eyewitness News caught up with Doherty in downtown Scranton Monday. He says he's still in it to win it. ÒThereÕs a high undecided. 73% of the people are undecided by the poll we saw last week and we know thatÕs a great opportunity for us and I've gotta tell you, the Scranton story plays well across the state."

Doherty is running for the democratic nomination against Dan Onorato, Jack Wagner and Joe Hoeffel. Onorato has raised the most money by far.

Still, it isn't paying off with voters. Angela Lyke says, ÒI haven't been paying attention too muchÉ I donÕt know any of the candidates.Ó

Doherty hopes that gives him the edge. ÒI like him. I voted for him. I don't know. Couldn't do any worse than anyone else,Ó says Dorothy Wittenbreder.

Doherty has already opened a campaign headquarters on Spruce Street in Scranton and says he has no plans to quit. ÒIf you work hard and you tell your store and people are attracted to it, you're going to be successful and we are being successful," he said.

Doherty says the democratic race will not come down to money. He thinks the voters will choose a candidate who thinks out of the box and gets things done and he says his resume at city hall shows he's done that.
