(Wilkes-Barre Township, LUZERNE COUNTY) - Wilkes-Barre Township's long time tax collector is off the job, at least for now; after being named the primary suspect in missing monies from the Township.
Ruth Ann Lyons was removed from her post earlier this week.
Wilkes-Barre Township Mayor Carl Kuren is speaking out about the Township's suspended Tax Collector, Ruth Ann Lyons.
Mayor Carl Kuren spoke with WBRE News, "She did a very good job as far, as I am concerned, except for what happened here. I have no complaints about her work."
Lyons was removed from the office without pay Tuesday, as the Luzerne County District Attorney investigates a $40,000.00 dollar discrepancy in Township finances.
Solicitor Bruce Phillips says Lyons is the only suspect involving the missing money.
Phillips stated, "We believe she acted alone. ItŐs very recent, over the last several months."
Phillips and the Mayor credit Business Administrator Mike Revitt with finding the error.
Mayor Kuren added, "I'm glad to have people like that working for me that could catch stuff like this. It's sad that this happened, but I have people working that."
Phillips stated, "In doing his monthly reviews, he saw something that didn't look quite right."
Mayor Kuren says everyone at work is in shock.
Kuren told WBRE News, "She's a very nice person; I mean she's been here a long time, she's been here 23 years."
Reporter Jill Konopka asks, "Does she have financial woes, any problems? Mayor Kuren said, ŇAt this point, I don't know."
This isn't the first time the township's had problems in the tax office.
In 1997, court papers revealed Township Secretary Amy Horsefield confessed to taking $2,500.00 in tax payer monies.

To be clear, Lyons has not been charged in this case of missing money.
Luzerne County District Attorney Jackie Musto Carroll says it the investigation is ongoing. Peter Moses will be representing Ruth Ann Lyons. When called, Moses stated he did not feel itŐs appropriate to comment yet because of the pending investigation.
We did ask Mayor Kuren what would happen if Ruth Ann Lyons was charged. Kuren says he'll wait for the outcome before making any decisions.
