Medical College Gets Shot in the Arm - Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 10:40PM EST
EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Sanofi Pasteur donated $1.5 million to th Commonwealth Medical College Tuesday afternoon. The college will put that money toward research facilities. "This is terrific. This is a wonderful gift!" exclaimed Robert D'Alessandri Dean of the medical college in Scranton.
He said the community needs to support the college because there is a nationwide doctor shortage. He added, "Locally its even a bigger problem. About a third of our doctors are going to retire in the next ten years and there's no one to replace them."
Doctor Jonathan Goldner is the Chief of Staff at Pocono Medial Center. He believes the new medical school will help keep new doctors in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Especially because many of the med students will train with him at Pocono. He said, "So we get to know them, they get to know us, the hospital, the community, it's really a big win situation."
While Sanofi Pasteur handed over a big check, Pocono Medical Center had its own surprise to offer. The hospital gave the school $80,000 in scholarship money. That scholarship will cover two years of tuition.
"Pocono's commitment is another clear example of community support," said D'Alessandri. School founders say everything about the Commonwealth Medical College is built for the community by the community.
Michael Decker of Sanofi Pasteur said, "It's not being created by some big organization. It's not being created by some powerful university. It's the people of the community who will benefit from it." | | |
