Mercy & Tyler Hospitals Formally Merge - Friday, January 1, 2010 at 6:30PM EST

TUNKHANNOCK, WYOMING COUNTY -- The new year begins with a new partnership between two hospitals. Friday Mercy Hospital and Tyler Memorial Hospital officially merged.
It was business as usual at whatŐs now the former Tyler Memorial Hospital. The minute the new year hit the hospital got a new name, Mercy Tyler Memorial.
Sr. Marie Parker said, "While we are a Catholic facility, we are very committed to honoring all faith traditions. And here at Tyler there are many faith traditions which we will incorporate. It is a faith-based ministry."
The hospital is now under Ohio-based Catholic Healthcare Partners, one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems in the U. S. Mercy Health Partners President Kevin Cook said, "It means that we expand our services in Wyoming County which is important for us as we extend our healing ministry. But itŐs also important for Tyler because it gives them a larger system to be a part of which maintaining their distinct culture. "
The deal was 16 months in the making. ItŐs a partnership where both sides say the core vales were the same.
Hospital President Denise Gieski said, "We have the same sense of spirit and community and we were very interested from the beginning. And we were thrilled that they were interested in us, as well."
Denise says jobs may change with the merger. Mercy Tyler currently has around 330 hospital employees and about 15 more at Home Health Services. Mercy Tyler Board Chairman Mark Mitchell said, "We recognized that we need to survive in the current healthcare environment."
But itŐs now an environment that the two sides will deal with, together, in a new year. | | |
