Meuser & Hackett Slug It Out in 10th Race - Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 7:00PM EST

Another hotly contested race in the area is in the 10th Congressional District where Republicans Dan Meuser and Chris Hackett are slugging it out in a campaign that's gotten more intense as the weeks go by.

There was a steady stream of voters at the Dallas Township Municipal Building all day Tuesday. As the signs to get into the parking lot showed, the race for the Republican nomination in the 10th Congressional District is tight. Helen Stroud of Dallas Township said, “You hear so much, you don't know what to believe. It gets you so confused."

Stroud is talking about the unending string of negative campaign ads that have hit the airwaves, coming from both sides. Joseph Maniskas said, “I didn't vote for any of them. Either one of them. Neither one deserves to be in office with what’s come out about them. I couldn't vote, justifiably, for either one of them."

Candidate Chris Hackett spent most of the day shaking hands and stumping for votes in Luzerne County. “I think there has certainly been some contrast between me and Dan. I think we've run good campaigns and it’s up to the voters to make the decision as to how they feel about each of us," said Hackett.

WBRE News caught up with Dan Meuser in Waymart, Wayne County as he criss-crossed the district. He apologized for the negative ads. “I am sorry that did occur. We did ask our opponent to agree to a positive campaign. We agreed. They flatly refused," claimed Meuser.

Parts of 14 area counties make up the 10th Congressional District and with polls showing the race is tight, both candidates are holding out hope. There's been a lot of media coverage and mailers, but this is all about people and people will see this through for us," said Meuser.

“We're in good shape all across the district, so we feel very comfortable where we are," added Hackett.
