Millville Honors Troops' Sacrifices

Millville Honors Troops' Sacrifices - Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 04:03AM EST

MILLVILLE, COLUMBIA COUNTY -- The Memorial Day Weekend ceremony at Millville Cemetery included a procession and prayer and patriotic music.

American Legion Post 564 in Millville holds what's become an annual tradition. "It's important that we memorialize our veterans who have sacrificed their time and their lives, have shed a lot of their blood for our country." said Post member Doug Resseguie.

One of those veterans is the ceremony's wreath layer. 87-year-old Arthur Albertson fought in World War Two in the Battle of Normandy. He remembers that day in June 1944 when he and fellow troops stormed Utah beach. "They said don't look back, don't look back. Keep going because you can't go back," said Mr. Albertson. "And I did but I looked back and there was guys... a lot of guys laying that didn't make it."

Albertson was wounded several times in the war and received among other awards the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. More than 6-decades later, he still thinks about the fallen. "They done a great job and I was just lucky. I wish you had been as lucky as me to get through," he said.

Such sacrifice is a lot to take-in -- especially for a child. "They didn't mean to die but they died because they were fighting for us and so we would be safe and stuff," says 6-year-old Persephone Brito of Millville whose mother wanted her to understand the true meaning of Memorial Day.

"I think it's important to just take time out and reflect on sacrifices that people made for our country," said Shirley Brito of Millville. And offer appreciation for our heroes. "I would want to tell the soldiers thank you for all you've done for us," said the little girl.
