JEANSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Some residents in Luzerne County remembered a sad part of mining history Tuesday night.
A memorial to the Jeansville Mine disaster was unveiled Tuesday Night.
During the ceremony doves were released in memory of the miners who lost their lives.
It was back on February 4, 1891 when miners cut through rock barrier holding back a reservoir of water.
13 men died in the accident.
Four other miners were rescued after being trapped for 19 days.
Organizers say the memorial is not only to honor those of the Jeasnville diaster, but to recognize all miners.
Pat Korb of Leadership Hazleton said
"I think the represent the spirit of Greater Hazleton the toughness of the people in the area, the dediccation the love of tradition this area, is very in much love with tradition."
Jeansville is just outside of Hazleton.
The memorial is a project of the Tri Area Recreation Authority and Leadership Hazleton.
